Our History - over 130 years in the making
St. Paul’s UCC was originally formed as a German Lutheran congregation in 1886. We have evolved over our more than 130 years in Laramie! First through the German Evangelical Synod and then the Evangelical & Reformed tradition which joined with the Congregational Christian Churches to form the United Church of Christ in 1957. The church building was erected in 1890, and is listed in the National Register of Historic Places (as St. Paulus Kirche). According to a document on file with the National Register, “St. Paul’s Church is the oldest remaining church structure in Laramie and is representative of the conservative influences exerted by religious groups in isolated western communities which made significant contributions to a trend toward a permanent well ordered civil minded communities in temporary boom towns.”
The building is not the church -- it's people are. The church has since evolved, with a diverse membership and progressive attitude, representative of the UCC. St. Paul’s is an Open and Affirming congregation, meaning that they are fully embracing of all. ‘No Matter Where You Are On Life’s Journey, You Are Welcome Here’, is what the UCC is about, and St. Paul’s fully embraces that. We are proud of our history, and we are focused on creatively drawing from our past to vision anew where God is calling us in our present and our future.
Services are held Sunday mornings at 10:00am, with coffee and discussion after. Communion is celebrated the first Sunday of the month.
In the UCC there is diversity since each congregation and individual is free to make up their own mind on all matters of faith, yet the national UCC calls us to be a thinking and evolving church where God is Still Speaking. The UCC has a rich history of social justice and considers itself the denomination that gets there first.
The abolition of slavery--the ordination of women--the support of civil rights for all--the support of marriage equality of all--the ordination of gay and lesbian persons. We are a progressive church in the best sense of that word. We hope you consider joining us on the journey.
