Open and Affirming
St. Paul's voted to become an open and affirming (ONA) church on October 11, 2009. St. Paul's ONA statement stated in part: "We believe all people are created in God's image and thus are loved and blessed equally by God. We welcome persons of every gender, sexual orientation, gender identity and expression, ability, age, race, nationality, economic and social status, faith background, marital standing
and family structure."
St. Paul's was the 842nd UCC church to become an ONA church. The national UCC website states ONA "is a movement of more than 1500 churches (as of January 2019) and other ministries in the United Church of Christ that welcome lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer (LGBTQ) members. More than 350,000 members of the UCC belong to ONA churches - and the movement is growing rapidly." ONA churches take seriously the Bible's admonition to "accept one another, just as Christ accepted you, in order to bring praise to God." (Romans 15:7)
